Appointment Update

We had quite the scare at the appointment today. First, I was running late because I got lost in the parking garage. So, of course my blood pressure was high and I got lectured.

Then they couldn't find a heartbeat with the doppler, the doctor tried for what felt like 10 minutes to find it and looked really concerned. So, he sent me down the hall for an ultrasound. I was okay until I heard the nurse say "viability scan", thank God DH was there because I proceeded to have a minor panic attack in the hallway. Once I stopped crying and shaking I had the ultrasound and found out everything was fine. We got to see nugget moving and jumping around and found out the heartbeat was 154 bpm. I was then able to fully calm down.

The tech was wonderful, she did a better job explaining things to me than the doctor did. H was also wonderful, I'm sure he was just as scared as I was and he's only seen me melt down that badly a few times in our entire relationship. He's going to go to the next appointment with me, because he's worried I'll melt down again and because he really wants to hear the heartbeat.

Oh wow! What a roller coaster! Sorry you had to go through that. Glad to hear that baby is doing just fine!

Do you mind me asking what your BP was? I'm sure mine would have been extremely elevated as well!

Now that I think about it, the nurse didn't tell me and I don't think the doctor ever said either.

  • I am glad everything is ok but I am sorry you had a scare.

Your doctor really should have explained to you that it is extremely difficult to find and hear the heartbeat with a doppler at 13 weeks.  My doctor didn't even attempt it as she said it causes undue anxiety to moms when the baby is still so little and it is likely that she will not find the heartbeat.  Instead, she brought a mini-US into the examining room and we just took a quick look to see the heartbeat.

These are the times that it is really unfair that we cannot have a glass of wine to relax!

This.  My doc made sure to explain to me both at my 12 and 16 week appts. that we may or may not find the HB with the Doppler and not to stress about it.  If needed we would do an US.  I'm sorry your doc freaked you out, but glad all is well.

  • I had the same exact thing happen to me with them not being able to find the heartbeat and then taking me immediately for an u/s. It's an incredibly scary feeling, but I'm so glad that everything was looking good and you were able to get a bonus peek of your LO.

Same here. My first doppler try was at almost 13 weeks and he made sure to tell me beforehand that we may not find it right away, and would move to an u/s if need be. We were able to find it on the doppler but it did take a little while. I wasn't as freaked out because he had told me that beforehand. Sorry your doctor didn't to this and got you worked up.

Glad your LO is doing well in there! Hopefully he or she won't hide next time!

  • Thanks for all the kind words, ladies! Logically, I knew there was no guarantee of actually hearing the heartbeat today, I read it this morning. But in that moment, I managed to forget all logic. I'm so relieved to know all is okay now and I'm going to mention to the doctor next time to warn me of things like that because my anxiety has been insane lately. I'm hoping it gets better with each appointment.
